This is a smoothie I like to whip up every time I feel like my gut needs a bit of TLC. A lot of illnesses are rooted from inflammation and an unhealthy gut lining. Poor diet choices, excess stress, allergies, and food intolerances are just a few of the things that can irritate your gut lining, resulting in inflammation.

I've been there! I know how uncomfortable it can be when your gut isn't functioning optimally. It affects your skin, hormones, bowls, immune system and so much more! After years of suffering IBS from food intolerance's, allergies and medication my gut lining has had quite a battle. Nowadays I choose to make diet and lifestyle choices that are going to have minimal impact on my gut, and overall health. I’ve written about the importance of gut health in numerous blog posts, and about what I did to heal my digestion.

This is one of my favourite smoothies that I wanted to share with you to help heal the gut lining and reduce inflammation at the same time.

What’s good about it:

- Berries: Rich source of antioxidants especially high in vitamin C to provide healing qualities.

- Flax and chia seeds: Rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which is a potent anti-inflammatory aid.

- Slippery Elm: This ingredient soothes and helps reduce discomfort in the stomach. It coats the stomach and mucous membranes with a thick mucilaginous substance while absorbing toxins.

- Glutamine: An amino acid that is vital to the wellbeing of our digestive tract and immune system. It’s fantastic for repairing damage to the gut lining, helping it regrow and repair (check with a health care specialist on the dosage level).

- Psyllium Husk: A fiber which helps absorbs moisture and flushes waste from your system.

- Cinnamon: Studies have shown cinnamon can reduce levels of cytokines (inflammatory regulatory molecules) in the body.

- Protein: Our bodies need good quality protein to build and repair tissues. It’s also needed to make enzymes, hormones and other body chemicals.

Ingredients:

1 serving vanilla protein powder or collagen powder
1 tbsp flaxseed oil or coconut oil
 1 tbsp chia seeds
1 cup organic blueberries or blackberries
 1 tsp glutamine powder
 1 tbsp slippery elm powder
 1 tsp psyllium husk
 ½ tsp cinnamon
 1 cup coconut milk
 1 cup water

Method:

1

Combined all ingredients into a blender and blend together until smooth. Pour into a large glass jar and enjoy!

Note: Don’t let it sit too long, otherwise the psyllium will soak up all the fluid making it become super thick!
