How You Can Benefit From A 12 Hour Daily Fast

Nov 15, 2019 | Digestion, Energy, Nutrition, Skin Issues, Weight Management, Wellness

Fasting is such a hot topic at the moment with so many people skipping breakfast, only eating for 8 hours of the day, or doing a 3-day juice fast. One day I’ll write a blog post about my opinion on fasting and also my experience with fasting, as I actually got into fasting 10 years ago and was hooked on it for many years. These days I don’t fast, the reason for that is because of my hormones, and for my body type extended fasting periods doesn’t do my body good.

But, what I do recommend often to clients, this is also something I try to do myself is to fast for 12 hours a day. Most people don’t realise that we actually fast on a daily basis – when we are sleeping, so without thinking you’re already fasting daily (unless you get up and snack throughout the night).

Fasting for 12 hours each night can help to give your digestive system a break from food, this can help to improve digestive health and it can also help with weight management allowing your body a little time to tap into the “fat burning zone”.

If you finish dinner around 7pm or 7.30pm then don’t eat again until 7am-7.30am the following day. Most of us know that eating a little earlier is also good for our health. The first 6-8 hours after eating dinner your body focuses on digesting food, however the last 4 hours are dedicated to detoxing, this is also the most effective time for your body to burn fat.

If you eat something before you go to bed, or eat dinner too late, leptin (a hormone) signals your brain that no energy is required, and fat burning won’t occur in the latter part of the night.

So, if you’re struggling to lose weight or are struggling with constipation or digestive issues maybe give the late-night snack a miss for a few weeks and try a 12 hour fast instead, it can do the body wonders.
