In February I did a short interview with NewsHub. There was a new research paper that came out suggesting breakfast may not be the most important meal of the day when wanting to lose weight. In my opinion and from years of clinical experience eating breakfast comes down to the individual, their current health and their health goals.
For some people fasting until noon can be amazing for their health, but for others (including myself) skipping breakfast can be one of the worst things we do for our health. Breakfast sure isn't a one-size-fit's all.
One of the biggest reasons for some people skipping breakfast can do more harm than good is because if you lead a busy lifestyle, are an anxious or high stressed person, skipping breakfast can signal your body that it’s going into a “perceived famine” state, and your body doesn’t know when it’s next going to be properly fed. This can lead to your body storing more food as fat as your body thinks it’s doing the best thing for you to “save your life” by storing away food to use as fuel for a later date. I also advice caution when skipping breakfast if you have a hormonal imbalance, particularly loss of menstruation.
Caution really needs to be taken before skipping breakfast for weight loss (and health in general) as there are many aspects that need to be taken into consideration, and if you're unsure whether skipping breakfast is right for you, seek professional help from a nutritionist or any qualified health care practitioner.
Also, it’s important to note that the majority of the people used in this research paper that was studied were already over weight or obese, therefore they had more weight to lose in the first place. This is why reading the headline of research articles and not the full paper need to be taken with caution.
