When it comes to comes to health and beauty the health of your liver is something to consider. If you want to look and feel your best, have balanced hormones, clear skin, sparkly eyes, fat loss, or lots of energy, I would highly recommend giving your liver some additional loving.
The liver is the body’s main detoxifying organ. In conjunction with the gallbladder, the liver works extremely hard to help us excrete fatty substances that the body no longer needs, including old hormones, pesticides, as well as stored body fat.
Your busy liver has over 500 jobs to accomplish. Everything that goes into the body from the food we eat, air/pollution we breathe, toxins put onto skin (from shampoo to moisturizers), medications consumed travels through the bloodstream and has to go through the liver for processing.
The liver has two stages to the detoxification process named phase 1 and phase 2. Both stages require certain nutrients to function, and dietary choices can influence how efficiently each phase is able to work. Phase 1 requires numerous nutrients, including B vitamins which are essential to this process. Phase 2 also requires specific nutrients such as amino acids and sulphur. Amino acids come from proteins, sulphur comes from eggs, onions, garlic, shallots as well as from the brassica family of vegetables.
There are many substances which are known as ‘Liver Loaders’ which as you can guess overload the liver making it work overtime, adding more stress to it. There include:
- Refined sugar
- Synthetic substances (pesticides, medications, skin care)
- Trans fats
Your body also makes substances itself which the liver also needs to be transformed by the liver so that they can be excreted. These include cholesterol, steroid hormones, untreated food sensitivities, substances causing by improper digestive processes and more.
Other factors which can affect the livers functioning include; poor digestion, OCP’s, PCOS, poor dietary choices.
As you can see your liver has got a lot of work to do! This is why for optimal health it is so important to look after the health of your liver.
