6 Easy Ways To “Detox” On A Daily Basis

Mar 5, 2019 | Digestion, Energy, Nutrition, Weight Management

First things first, let me inform you that our body is detoxing every second of every day. BUT, there are things we can do regularly, or even daily which may help to enhance our bodies natural detoxification process.

When health practioners speak about “detoxing” we are mainly referring to supporting our bodies natural detox systems, which are our liver, kidneys, bowel and skin.

Every single day we are exposed to a barrage of harmful toxins, from consuming commercially grown food, the water we drink (specifically tap water), the air we breathe, skin care products or medications we take. For this reason I am a huge believer in supporting our detoxification channels to minimize our exposure to common toxins, and move and eliminate these substances through our bodies more effectively. This may enhance our bodies immune and repair systems to work more effectively so we can feel our best.

Not only from my studies, but also after years of suffering with poor digestion (I was diagnosed with IBS and had leaky gut), eczema, a weakened immune system and a hormonal imbalance I understand more than ever the importance of enhancing our bodies detoxification channels in order to improve numerous health conditions. Some of the strategies I am going to share with you are ones I incorporate into my lifestyle daily, and there are some which I also recommend to clients when I see their detoxification channels need additional support to improve their overall health and wellbeing.

Simply by incorporating these tips into our lifestyles they may help with the elimination of toxins and waste, increase energy, improve digestion and potentially aid in weight loss.

1. Stay hydrated by drinking 2-3 litres of filtered water daily
Water is needed to help soften the stools to flush out toxins and eliminate waste that could be sitting in our colon. Water also is needed to support kidney health and liver health. Always drink a big glass of warm water upon waking, and add the juice from ½ a lemon to kick-start the detoxing process first thing.

2. Sweat regularly
Sweating is crucial for expelling  toxins. The best ways to sweat are through exercise or a sauna, an infrared sauna is known as one of the best saunas, which assists in removing heavy metal toxins stored in fat tissues. Try to sweat a few times each week, if not daily.

3. Eat plenty of fiber
Soluble fiber helps to bind-up toxins in the gut and helps promote regularity, which is essential when wanting to “detox”. When you are constipated, toxins from the bowel can be reabsorbed into your system through the gut lining, this then adds an additional load to your liver, and may result in a congested liver. So, make sure you’re moving your bowel at least 1 daily. Fruit and vegetables are a great source of soluble fiber, eat 6 servings daily, minimum.

4. Support your gut
By eating fermented foods such as kimchi and sauerkraut or a take a good quality probiotic. This will feed the good flora in your gut which helps to reduce the “bad” bacteria in your gut, and may also strengthen your immune system (over 70% of our immune system is in our gut), aid in digestion and helps you to assimilate the nutrients from your food more effectively.

5. Choose organic when you can
I understand buying all produce and house hold products organic is not affordable for everyone. So, do your best and choose organic when you can. Especially with fruits and vegetables because commercially grown produce is loaded with pesticides, toxins and GMO’s, synthetic fertilizers which overload our bodies, especially our liver. And opt for natural cleaning and beauty products when possible. One of my favourite natural cleaning companies is Wendyl’s (they are also a New Zealand owned company), have a look at their website and range of products which are quite affordable, they also have lots of DIY recipes for cleaning and beauty products.

6. Eat “detoxifying” foods
The liver and kidney serve as the body’s filtration system, supporting these systems is important for overall health and cleansing. Foods that support these systems include organic leafy greens, broccoli, cauliflower, beetroot, carrots, parsley, cilantro, onions, garlic, lemon, turmeric, artichokes.
