I’m A Holistic Nutritionist – Here Is My Morning Routine

Sep 19, 2016 | Nutrition, Wellness

How do you feel right after you open your eyes in the morning? Are you excited to start your day, or do you feel exhausted so you decide to roll over and go back to sleep? The choices you make in the morning can really set you up for the day and have a huge impact on your mood and stress levels. I often get asked about morning routines, so I thought I would share with you my morning routine. I’ve been doing this for years and find it really sets me up for the day! Oh, and just so you know I don’t check my phone until it’s breakfast time. This is something I’m super strict with!

6-6.30am Wake up

Wake up, scrap my tongue, boil the kettle. Every morning I enjoy 1 cup of Artemis Liver Loving Detox tea. I’ve been drinking this tea upon rising for years. I have PCO (polycystic ovaries) so when you have a hormonal imbalance the liver needs a lot of extra loving which is why I always start my day off with this tea. Sometimes I’ll add fresh lemon juice or freshly grated ginger for an extra kick.

Gratitude Writing

Once I’ve made my tea, I hop back into bed and I start my gratitude writing. This takes me about 10-15 minutes. I write down things that I’m grateful for and appreciate in my life. It helps me to feel grounded and centered for the day. I’m not strict with this ritual, I do sometimes take a week or two off from it, but I truly believe it is life-changing when I do it and commit to it.

Most of the time we talk, think and focus on things we don’t want. How often do you celebrate what you do have in your life, or how often do you take the time to appreciate how far you’ve come? Every single day can be amazing, we have a choice. When you stop and think about where you are, and all you have in your life from your health, relationship, family, friends to the house over your head, your car, or job you come to realize that you have quite a lot to be thankful for.

Movement

Now it’s time to move my body. I’ve always been a big fan of waking up and getting my workout done! I focus on movement as opposed to intensity. I vary what I do depending on how I’m feeling. I workout 5-6x per week and I’ll do a mixture of exercises to keep things interesting. 2-3x per week I’ll either go for a walk or do yoga at home and 3x per week I’ll do either Pilates or resistance/weight training (TRX is my fav). My workouts are always between 30-45 minutes.

Shower, get ready for the day.

Breakfast – generally between 8-8.30am

Time for a nourishing, delicious breakfast. Breakfast is my absolute favourite meal of the day. Over the cooler months, I’ve been enjoying porridge, if you have been following me on Instagram you would have seen I’ve been slightly obsessed with buckwheat porridge over the winter months. Now that the weather is getting warmer I’ve been enjoying smoothies for breakfast a little more often. I always make sure my breakfast contains a good source of protein and healthy fats, this helps to stabilize my blood sugar and keeps me satiated until lunch.

Buckwheat porridge topped with fruit, seeds, raw cacao nibs

9-9.30am Time to check my emails, start work and Instagram my breakfast 😉

What do you love to do in the morning that sets you up for the day? Comment below, I’d love to hear from you!
