Last week I went on a little adventure in the South Island, exploring Franz Josef, Wanaka and Queenstown before heading to a friend’s wedding in Martinborough. Being a nutritionist I’m always health conscious, so when I travel I take specific supplements and/or powders with me to ensure I keep my health in check.
I wanted to share with you a few staple items that I always take in my travel bag. I only went exploring around New Zealand for one week, so I wasn’t too worried about being perfect with my diet and lifestyle. However, I still like to carry a few items with me to keep my health in tip top shape as much as I can. This helps to keep my energy levels high, makes me feel good and boosts my nutritional profile. It’s important for me to make sure I get in essential nutrients when travelling to support my body while I’m enjoying different meals which may not be the healthiest, or while I enjoy a few more glasses of wine than normal (it’s called balance and a holiday for a reason right!).
Green Powder – packed with nutrients for energy! I love Nuzest Good Green Stuff single serve sachets which contains over 75 ingredients. It's a superfood in a pouch which delivers optimal health, energy and vitality to every cell in the body. I just mix a packet in water for my daily dose of greens!
Shelf Stable Probiotic – gotta look after your gut! Healthy gut = happy mind! I used BioMedica Tri Flora which helps support the gut flora and gut lining. Also great to help with the travel bloat! This is a practioner only product.
Protein – for easy meals and snacks. I choose a natural protein, Nuzest Clean Lean Protein which is easy to carry and comes in single serve sachets. No one likes a “hangry” person, so often if I don’t have anything healthy on hand, or if I’m going on a long car ride I’ll mix a packet of protein in either water or coconut water for an easy snack.
Dark Chocolate – Because who doesn’t love dark chocolate! I’m obsessed with Natava Tender Loving Cacao chocolates. They are the perfect sweet pick me up which is completely guilt free! Dark chocolate is a great source of iron, magnesium, antioxidants, copper and manganese. So many health benefits with no guilt!
Herbal Teas – I’m also obsessed with herbal teas. I love Pukka single serve teas as they are easy to travel with. I took with me their matcha green tea which I enjoy as an energy boost (it’s also a great source of antioxidants and is great for the liver), as well as a few other varieties such as their night time, three mint and detox tea which is also great to support to the liver. Often the liver needs a bit of extra loving while being indulgent on holiday. These teas also contains de-bloating ingredients.
Chia Seeds – When I stayed in one place for a few days I sometimes like to make a chia pudding to enjoy for breakfast or as a snack. I simply add add 4 tbsp of seeds into a glass with ½ cup rice/almond milk then I’ll top it with fresh fruit. Sometimes I add 1-2 tbsp of chia seeds to a water bottle to increase my fiber intake, helping to support elimination.
Essential Oils – This was the first time I’ve used it. I often get anxious when travelling (usually on long haul flights), but I thought I’d experiment with Absolute Essentials Travellwell (organic) to induce calmness while on the plane. I only used it a couple of times but I really liked it. It smells amazing too!
Water – Not featured in this photo but I always carry a water bottle with me. Water is key! Even if you’re on a short flight or driving in the car, staying hydrated is crucial so when you arrive at your destination you’re feeling awake, energized, and your digestive system is happy.
