Think you know what's healthy? You might — but here's how you can still benefit from working with a Registered Clinical Nutritionist such as myself. Whether you’re looking to lose or gain weight, quit sugar, improve energy levels or improve your digestive health, find out how a Holistic Nutritionist could support you.
One of the most common assumptions of a nutritionist is that we facilitate weight loss. Of course we can help with this goal, but there are many other areas in health in which someone can work with us.
In fact, most of my clients are working with me because they either have an on-going health or medical condition they would like to improve, or they would like to prevent future problems. Others see nutritionists because they are so confused about what "diet" to follow. Ever done a quick google search about weight loss to have a huge range of articles show up about “drop three dress sizes in a week”, to supplements, shakes and juices to help aid weight loss. There is SO much information out there now it can be confusing and overwhelming to know what is right for YOU, and what to steer clear of!
If you’ve been following the same diet for a while and haven’t noticed any improvements with your health, maybe it’s time to consider a new approach and seek professional help. Some of my clients have no idea where to start to improve their health, others already have what they view as the perfect diet (which they aren’t far off), however they still can’t shift those last few kilos, or quit their sugar addiction for good, or stabilize their energy levels throughout the day, or they just simply can’t uncover what’s causing their digestive problems (bloating, constipation, diarrhoea, reflux, indigestion). In all these situations, I can help.
I know first hand what it’s like to have health issues.
I’ve been through my own health challenges and understand how difficult it is to break old habits, resist temptation and make lasting changes. I’ve suffered with asthma, eczema, sugar addiction, IBS, leaky gut, hormonal imbalance (PCO), low immune system, food allergies and intolerance's, restrictive diets, fad diets, over-exercising as punishment from binge eating. I’ve been there, I know what it’s like. And if I can become symptom free, so can you! But we all need a little helping hand sometimes.
It’s my mission to help you learn that healthy living should be fun, rewarding, enjoyable and NOT boring, difficult or feel like a chore.
Working with me (a Registered Clinical Nutritionist), offering an unbiased and realistic view can help you:
Look at nutrient deficiencies
Even if you get enough, or too many, calories, you could be undernourished, you may not be absorbing nutrients effectively. Or, if you already know you are deficient in a nutrient, I can help you get your levels back to where they should be.
A common deficiency especially for women is iron, and I can help you know what to eat or what foods to combine for optimal absorption of iron.
Help you lose weight, improve digestive systems, beat sugar cravings, improve energy levels
I can help you lose weight in a healthy way, and help you use nutritious whole foods to improve your digestive, beat bloating/constipation/diarrhoea/reflux/indigestion, beat sugar cravings for good and boost your energy levels.
Tailor an eating plan
Knowing what to eat to help you reach your goals is one of the biggest challenges when it comes to changing your weight. And this is exactly what a nutrition professional is for – to help you create a new way of eating that will not only support your goals, but also your health and overall well-being.
Help you learn how to use food as fuel
I will assess your current way of eating so I can get a clearer understanding of how, what and when you’re currently eating to see where you can make changes and what nutrients you may be missing out on to reach your health goals. To do this I’ll ask you to fill in a food diary prior to your initial consultation. Being as honest as possible here helps me help you!
Identify habits/actions that may be holding you back
Once I have your health goals and information about your diet and lifestyle habits I will assess your behaviours that might be hindering your progress. For example, if you’re trying to lose weight but have a high stress response, the could be a sticking point, or if you’re always constantly fatigue at 3-4pm maybe we need to assess your sleep habits and patterns or maybe the food you've consumed earlier in the day isn’t serving you. Together we can look at which behaviours are holding you back and create strategies to change these behaviours.
Discuss your motivation to make changes
This usually happens during your initial consultation. Here you’ll be able to talk through any physical symptoms or conditions you’re struggling with and why you’re looking to change your diet and lifestyle habits. Being honest about your medical history and what you’re experiencing will help me as a nutritionist tailor your food plan and lifestyle recommendations to your specific needs.
Offer accountability and support
Throughout the process, having a nutritionist can help to give you accountability. Meaning that you’ll have someone to ‘report’ to as it were, and someone to support you as you work towards your goals.
These are just a few ways I can help. Along with this and much more...
I will also clear up any nutrition myths you may have and help you realize what YOU should really be focusing on for YOUR health. As mentioned above I am a great resource for accountability, encouragement and fresh ideas for healthy eating.
